Athletes really are record breakers

HÀ NỘI — Ngần Ngọc Nghĩa of the Ministry of Public Security set a national record in the men’s 100m event at the National Sports Games yesterday in Hà Nội.

Nghĩa ran 10.47sec, beating the old record made by Lê Trọng  Hinh of Thanh Hóa in 2014 by just 0.1sec.

Later Ka Hoa of Ninh Thuận threw 14.48m to take a gold medal in the women’s shot put. Her result was better than the old record of 14.45m by Lê Thị Lài of Sóc Trăng which has stood for five years.

Track-and-field athletes also set Games records in the women’s 100m by Lê Tú Chinh of HCM City, women’s long jump by Hanoian Bùi Thị Thu Thảo,  men’s and women’s 4x400m and women’s 4x800m of Hà Nội.

In cycling, Lê Nguyệt Minh and Nguyễn Thị Thật won the first gold medals of the road race events yesterday.

Minh of HCM City finished 49km in the men’s point trial individual event winning 13 points. He was followed by Nguyễn Thành Tâm of An Giang and Nguyễn Minh Trí from Đồng Tháp.

The women’s title went to Thật of An Giang. The Asian champion pocketed 16 points for a 39km distance.

Bùi Thị Quỳnh of Bình Dương was second and Nguyễn Thị Thi, also from An Giang, came third.

Cycling will continue today with men’s and women’s time trial events.

Today, masters will begin their tournament in the standard chess event.

Nearly 180 contestants from 18 teams will take part in 12 categories for team and individual titles in rapid, blitz and standard chess.

Chess will conclude on December 8.

Hà Nội are firmly on top of the ranking table with 40 golds. HCM City second with 24 and Bình Dương third with eight. — VNS
