HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese cueist Ngô Đình Nại booked a ticket to compete in the main round of the Carom 3-Cushion World Cup in La Baule, France on Thursday.
Nại, world No 18, tied with Dion Nelin of Denmark, world No 91, 40-40 in 17 innings in the second match of Group B.
Earlier, Nại beat Hideaki Kobayashi of Japan, world No 63, 40-21 in 21 innings.
With these results, Nại was one of three best runners-up to join the 32 final players for the main draw.
Other Vietnamese representatives also entering the main round included Mã Minh Cẩm, world No 25, Trần Quyết Chiến, No 8, Mã Xuân Cường. No 31 and Nguyễn Quốc Nguyện, No 9.
La Baule World Cup is one of the eight Grand Prix stages under the official competition system of the Union Mondiale de Billiard (UMB).
The 2018 version of the tournament brought together 149 competitors, including most of the world’s leading cueists at present. Việt Nam sent eight players to the event, which will end tomorrow.
The World Cup event offers 80 bonus points for the champion, 54 points for the runner-up, 38 points for the semi-finalists, 26 points for the quarter-finalists.
Last year, Vietnamese Cường produced a “seismic” advance into the semi-finals. Breaking through the qualification rounds, the 36-year-old cueist then overcame former world champions Marco Zanetti (Round of 32) and Choi Sung-won (Round of 16), and the 2015 runner-up, Kang Dong-Koong in the quarter-finals. — VNS
