Track and field athletes honoured for ASIAD 2018

The Việt Nam Sports Administration (VSA) and the Việt Nam Athletics Federation (VAF) held a ceremony in Hà Nội on Wednesday to commend and reward track and field athletes for their achievements recorded at the recent Asian Games 2018 (ASIAD 2018).

HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam Sports Administration (VSA) and the Việt Nam Athletics Federation (VAF) held a ceremony in Hà Nội on Wednesday to commend track and field athletes for their achievements at the recent Asian Games 2018 (ASIAD 2018).

At the event, VAF President Hoàng Vệ Dũng said the Vietnamese athletics team has excelled themselves at, with one gold, one silver and three bronze medals, while breaking three national records.

Việt Nam was the only country in Southeast Asia to bag a gold medal in athletics, he said.

VSA deputy head Trần Đức Phấn spoke highly of the Vietnamese athletics team’s ASIAD 2018 achievements, saying he hoped they would continue to improve and gain higher achievements.

Besides the prize money they received in Indonesia, the team will receive VNĐ370 million (US$15,800) from sponsors.

Gold medalist Bùi Thị Thu Thảo got VNĐ200 million ($8,700) and $1,000 while her coach Nguyễn Mạnh Hiếu was granted VNĐ50 million ($2,170).

Việt Nam sent 523 people, including 352 athletes, to ASIAD 2018. They finished 17th out of 45 countries and territories in the medals table, with four gold, 16 silver, and 18 bronze medals. 

The four golds were in pencak silat (70-75 kg and 90-95 kg), women’s long jump and women’s lightweight quadruple sculls categories. At the last ASIAD in 2014, Việt Nam won one gold, 10 silver and 25 bronze medals, ranking 21st in the overall medals table. — VNS
