SPIJK — Chinese golfer Wu Ashun fired a four-under-par final round of 67 on Sunday to edge out England’s Chris Wood by one shot and win the Dutch Open at Spijk.

The 33-year-old had started the day one stroke behind Wood, but a strong finish with three birdies in his final five holes saw him claim his third European Tour title on 16-under for the tournament.

"Unbelievable this week," Wu, the world number 344, said. "I am so happy, very happy today and thank you everyone.

"We just fixed my swing at the beginning of the year and we still trust that we are going the right way."

A double-bogey at the 12th hampered Wood’s challenge, and the world number 95 failed to find a birdie at the par-five 18th which would have forced a play-off, three-putting on the final green.

Padraig Harrington continued his recent return to form since losing his PGA Tour card, as the three-time major winner signed for a three-under 68 and a solo finish of fifth.

Belgian Thomas Detry, who had equalled the course record with a 63 on Saturday, ended tied for third with Japan’s Hideto Tanihara. — AFP
