HÀ NỘI — Phan Hoàng Thái won the first stage of Return to the Countryside Cycling Tournament of the Gạo Hạt Ngọc Trời Cup on Thursday.
Thái, belonging to Domesco Đồng Tháp, won the 65km race around Phú Quốc Island in Kiên Giang Province.
Phan Tuấn Vũ of Bike Life Đồng Nai and Quàng Văn Cường of Gạo Hạt Ngọc Trời An Giang were the runners-up.
Thái also won the green jersey award for the best sprinter.
The tournament is being jointly hosted by the Việt Nam Cycling and Motor Sport Federation and Lộc Trời Group.
At the opening ceremony, Lộc Trời Group gave poor families in Phú Quốc three tonnes of rice.
Cyclists are competing in the second stage Friday from Hà Tiên to Rạch Giá.
Some 63 cyclists from eight domestic teams and one foreign team are competing in 11 stages, covering 939km through 11 provinces and cities of Mekong Delta, including Kiên Giang, Cà Mau, Bạc Liêu and Sóc Trăng.
The eight-day event will give away a total cash prize of VNĐ600 million (US$26,000). — VNS
