HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese club Nam Định defeated China’s Guangzhou Evergrande 3-0 in the opener of the 2017 China-ASEAN Cities Football Invitational Tournament on Wednesday.
Nam Định recently bagged a berth in next season’s national premier league next season while Guangzhou have now won the Chinese Super League (CSL) eight years in a row.
However, at this event, Guangzhou, under coach Fabio Canavaro, sent a squad of young players, who have made very few appearances at the CSL.
In the other game, played later, Thailand’s Pattaya United beat Việt Nam’s Quảng Ninh Coal 2-0.
Nam Định will play Pattaya United in the final on Saturday while Guangzhou meet Quảng Ninh Coal in the third-place play-off match.
The four-day event attracted four clubs from China, Việt Nam and Thailand. This is the second edition of the invitational event, a Grade A2 tournament recognised by FIFA. — VNS
