Nguyễn Anh Khôi secured a double at the World Youth U14, U16 and U18 Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, which ended in Greece on Monday.

HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Anh Khôi secured a double at the World Youth U14, U16 and U18 Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, which ended in Greece on Monday.

The Vietnamese International Master (IM) was the winner of the boys’ U16 blitz event, confirming his victory after the eighth match at the nine-match tournament.

Khôi, former world U10 and U12 standard chess champion, won seven matches and drew one, before losing his only game in the last round.

IM Adam Kozak from Hungary came second, followed by Georgios Mitsis of the host nation.

Earlier, Khôi, one of the three youngest masters to win a national championship title, triumphed in the U16 rapid chess category with nine wins.

It is Việt Nam’s best result at the world competition’s U16 event.

In the U18 blitz, master Lê Minh Hoàng of Việt Nam secured a silver medal.

He earned 6.5 points, 0.5 less than winner Valeriy Kazakovskiy of Belarus.

Việt Nam also secured two other silvers, won by Nguyễn Hồng Ngọc in the girls’ U18 category and Đỗ Vũ Thiên Nhi in the girls’ U16 class.

The world championships wrapped up with Việt Nam bringing home three gold and three silver medals in total. — VNS
