HÀ NỘI — Martial artist Trương Thị Kim Tuyền brought home Việt Nam’s first world silver medal in taekwondo at the 2017 WTF World Taekwondo Championships in Muju, South Korea on June 25.
Tuyền lost to Sim Jae-young of South Korea in the final to finish second of the women’s 46kg category, in which Việt Nam previously achieved only bronze medals. To reach the final, Tuyền, ranked 33rd in the world, defeated six rivals, including Napaporn Charanawat from Thailand, who is world No 6 and won the 2016 WTF World Junior Taekwondo Championships in this division.
“Tuyền’s weak point is being shorter than others. However, she trains very hard and learns new techniques very fast. I watched her competition and saw that she deserved her world silver medal,” said former coach of the national taekwondo team Nguyễn Thế Hiệp.
The 20-year-old Tuyền won gold medals at the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore and Asian Junior Taekwondo Championships two years ago. — VNS
