HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Tiến Minh defended his tennis title at the CIPUTRA HANOI - YONEX SUNRISE Vietnam International Challenge, which closed in Hà Nội yesterday.
The No 1 seed defeated Thai rival Khosit Phetpradab 21-14, 21-17 in the men’s final at Cầu Giấy Gymnasium.
Minh started the match slowly, letting Phetpradab take the lead with the first 14 points. However, the former world No 5 came from behind to win the first set in 30 minutes. The second set was easier for Minh, who needed only 15 minutes to defeat Phetpradab.
This was the second time that Minh beat Phetpradab, after he won 21-9, 21-10 at the Yonex Chinese Taipei Open in 2013.
His wife and teammate, Vũ Thị Trang, however, failed to again win her gold medal yesterday.
No 1 Trang lost 16-21, 17-21 to No 2 Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand in the women’s final.
The men’s doubles title went to Indian Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. The No 6 duo came from behind to win 17-21, 21-9, 21-15 over No 5 Trawut Potieng and Nanthakarn Yordphaisong of Thailand.
The women’s doubles gold was earned by Japanese Erina Honda and Nozomi Shimizu, while the mixed doubles crown went to China’s Shi Longfei and Tang Pingyang. — VNS
