ĐÀ NẴNG — Seven records in swimming were smashed in the fourth day of competition at the ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) by student athletes from Indonesia, Việt Nam and Thailand earlier this week.

Two Indonesian swimmers – Jeremy Elyon Master Ganesha and Jason Donovan Yusuf – both broke the old record in the boys’ 50m butterfly set by Singapore’s Mikkel Lee Jun Jie in 2018.

But Jeremy Elyon Master Ganesha became the new record holder as he clocked in at 24.81 seconds, shaving off a 10th of a second from the previous record (24.94sec) and winning the gold.

Jason Donovan also surpassed the old record as he finished second in 24.84sec for the silver medal.

Vietnamese student Nguyễn Thuý Hiền and Thailand’s Nutthanicha Lochajaru also both surpassed the old record in the girls’ 50m butterfly.

Hiền earned a time of 27.36sec to beat the old record (28.27sec, set by Indonesian Sofie Kemala Fatiha eight years ago) for the gold medal.

Thai student Nutthanicha Lochajaru also smashed the old record as she finished second in 27.93sec.

Vietnamese athlete Nguyễn Quang Thuấn set a new record in the boys’ 200m individual medley, marking his second record at the Games.

He recorded a time of 2:4.35, clearing 2.04sec off the previous record by Ian James Barr of Malaysia in 2011.

The Indonesian team were awarded with a new record in the boys’ 4x100m freestyle relay with a time of 3:26.42, beating the old record of 3:27.79 set by the Singapore team in 2011.

Việt Nam's team also broke the old record in the 4x100m freestyle relay after finishing first in 3:54, just one second faster than the previous record of 3:55.01 set by the Singapore team in 2013.

In athletics, Thailand had a successful day after winning four gold medals on June 5.

Thai team members finished first in the 4x100m relay mixed boys and girls, winning the gold with a time of 44.98 seconds.

Wachilavit Chaleeniwat grabbed the gold medal in the boys’ triple jump with a result of 15.07m, while Wirayut Daenkhanop finished first in the boys’ 200m for gold.

In the boys’ discus throw (1.5kg), Ratchapong Malasri took gold for Thailand with a 51.61m throw.

Malaysia also clinched two gold medals in athletics in the girls’ 200m and boys’ 4x100m relay.

Vietnamese student Nguyễn Ngọc Khánh Bằng won gold in the girls’ shot put with a 13.56m throw, while Vũ Trà My took home the gold in the girls’ 800m. The host team finished the day by taking gold in the 4x400m mixed relay.

Indonesian Yad Hapizudin took home the gold medal in the boys’ 1,500m in 4:5.85.

In the traditional martial art of Vovinam, Myanmar's team won the gold in a performance of one female defender against three males with weapons, a team performance event.

Yun Lawunn Eain of Myanmar won the gold medal in the women’s performance of the Dragon-Tiger form.

Việt Nam's team earned a gold medal in the leg-attack category, in which four males perform two leg attack techniques each.

The host country remains at the top of the medal table as of June 5, winning 27 golds, 17 silvers and seven bronzes.

Thailand followed in second with 11 golds, 12 silvers and 15 bronzes, and Malaysia in third, bagging nine gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze medals.
