HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese masters have won two slots to compete in the Chess World Cup 2023 in July.

Võ Thị Kim Phụng won the Asia Zone 3.3 Chess Championships 2023's women's category which closed on Saturday in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Women's Grandmaster (WGM) finished on top of the rankings with 6.5 points after nine rounds.

Her teammate WGM Nguyễn Thị Mai Hưng came second with 6 points.

International Master Karenza Dita of the hosts was third on 6.

In the Open category, Vietnamese GM Lê Tuấn Minh finished second with six points.

Master Lê Tuấn Minh of Việt Nam (left) is one of two male masters who gained tickets to the world championship.

He was behind GM Bilguun Sumiya of Mongolia who pocketed seven points.

Another Mongolian GM Batchuluun Tsegmed was third.

With the results, Phụng, Sumiya and Tuấn qualified for the world event.

Việt Nam sent 13 masters to the tournament competing against competitors from nine other countries and territories. There were 58 participants (35 men and 23 women) fighting for two men's and one women's tickets to the 2023 World Cup Chess Championship Baku Azerbaijan.

The World Cup is a 206-player single-elimination chess tournament that will be held from July 30 to August 24. VNS
