HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Thị Oanh won a fourth gold in the track-and-field while teammate Nguyễn Thị Huyền broke her record at the 32nd SEA Games on May 12 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Oanh took part in the women's 10,000m, the fourth event in five days, as one of two favourites along with teammate Phạm Thị Hồng Lệ who was the defending champion.

Oanh, who often beat Lệ in local tournaments, led the race and finished first in a time of 35min 11.53sec.

Lệ was close behind and pocketed a silver while Odekta Elvina Naibaho of Indonesia, who won the women's marathon gold on May 6, came third.

"Thank you all for supporting me. Thanks for all of your messages and best wishes that push me to success," Oanh told reporters at the Morodok Techo National Stadium.

"Finally I have completed my tasks. No more worries and pressure. I now can rest and enjoy my happiness."

The four-time champion said the fourth gold is a special gift to her coach Trần Văn Sỹ on his birthday.

“I have been nervous all day, planning to have a perfect performance as a present to Sỹ who has trained me to bag success. I wish him all the best, good health and always to be a dedicated coach as he has been," Oanh said.

Oanh has become the best runner of the 32nd Games with four golds. Her other golds were in 1,500m, 5,000m and 3,000m steeplechase.

Nearly an hour later, Huyền broke her own record in winning the 13th gold from the SEA Games set on May 11.

Huyền along with three teammates won her title in the women's 4x400m.

On May 11, she became the most successful SEA Games runner of all time with a record of 12 golds.

As the powerhouse in this event for three Games, the Vietnamese runners made their incredible sprint leaving rivals far behind, to defend their crown in 3:33.05.

Runners from the Philippines took silver while Thailand earned bronze.

The Vietnamese athletics team ended their campaign with 12 golds, standing second behind Thailand who got 16.

Wushu martial artists also wrapped up their tournament on May 12 with six golds.

In addition to two golds in taolu (performance) event, they pocketed four in sanda (combat) yesterday.

Nguyễn Thị Lan won in the women's 48kg class. She beat Cherry Than of Myanmar in the final.

Bùi Trường Giang won the men's 60kg gold after beating Gideon Fred Wayan Padua of the Philippines.

Trương Văn Chưởng defeated Samual Marbun of Indonesia in the men's 65kg.

The last title went to Đinh Văn Bí after he overcame Chhuon Bunthai of the hosts in the men's 70kg.

Việt Nam team dominate the men's team recognised poomsae event.

Taekwondo martial artists took one gold in the men's team poomsae (performance). Trio Phạm Quốc Việt, Nguyễn Thiên Phụng and Nguyễn Trọng Phúc showed the best performance to top the table of seven competitors.

Nguyễn Thành Lộc secures Việt Nam's first finswimming medal in the men's surface event.

Việt Nam's strong sport of finswimming began on May 12 with eight finals.

Nguyễn Thành Lộc won the first gold for Việt Nam in the men's surface event in a time of 35.33sec.

He was followed by teammate Đỗ Đình Toàn and Thai Chamnanwat Khet.

"It is the first gold of my team and my second in the SEA Games. I am happy and believe that I can do better in the next events," said Lộc adding that he also wanted to set records here.

Minutes later, Lê Thị Thanh Vân finished first in the women's 100m freestyle bifins, clocking 49.54sec.

Indonesian Dewi Ressa was second and Nguyễn Thị Thảo of Việt Nam third.

"My time is not good as I wanted, but a gold medal makes me satisfied. It is my first SEA Games and I am nervous. But when in competition, I just tried to finswim as fast as possible from beginning to the end. It is my tactic," said Vân who still has more events in the upcoming days.

The team also pocketed golds in the men's and women's 4x200m surface relays. VNS
