HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam recorded its 11th COVID-19-related death on Sunday afternoon, a 55-year-old woman in Đà Nẵng with severe pneumonia and a history of hypertension. 

The woman, living in Hải Châu II Ward, Hải Châu District of the central city, was identified as Việt Nam’s 456th COVID-19 patient. 

On July 28, she was admitted to Hoàn Mỹ General Hospital in Đà Nẵng and was diagnosed with acute pneumonia, suspected to be caused by COVID-19. 

She was tested and confirmed positive for SARS-CoV-2 on July 29. 

A day later, the patient’s condition worsened with acute respiratory distress syndrome and a history of hypertension, and she was moved to Huế Central Hospital for treatment. 

On August 6, she suffered a deep vein thrombosis in her left thigh as well as a pulmonary embolism. 

On August 7, her condition continued to deteriorate and she was intubated. She was treated with continuous renal replacement therapy (CCRT) to filter her blood, along with ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), the artificial heart-lung machine. 

At about noon on Sunday, the patient suffered from low blood pressure, gastrointestinal bleeding and cardiac arrest, and despite multiple resuscitation efforts by doctors, the patient did not survive. 

The official cause of death was acute pneumonia caused by COVID-19 and complications, acute respiratory distress syndrome, multiple organ failure and gastrointestinal bleeding with a history of hypertension. — VNS
