HCM CITY — Border guards in HCM City’s Long Hòa Town have caught two barges illegally mining sand off the coast of Cần Giờ.

The two barges were caught on Saturday while crew members were using large capacity pumps to gather sand, said Colonel Phạm Long Bào, head of Long Hòa Town Border Guard.

The guards seized the barges with a combined 1,000cu.m of sand for investigation because the captains could not show the required permits.

In recent years, HCM City border guards and waterway traffic police have dealt with a number of illegal sand mining operations and seized some barges.

According to the force, miners have employed different tactics to evade police, including faking documents of origin or using fake plates on their vessels. — VNS
