HÀ NỘI — The Embassy of India will organise a number of activities to celebrate the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule.

Rajesh Uike, Indian Deputy Ambassador to Việt Nam, revealed the plans during a media conference held in Hà Nội on Friday.

The Embassy, in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Vietnam-India Friendship Association, will organise the birthday ceremony on October 2.

Different activities will be held such as an exhibition about the late leader, a circulation of a set of stamps and a special magazine about him.

In June this year, the Swami Vivehananda Cultural Centre under the Indian Embassy organised a day on cycling, films book readings about Gandhi.

On August 19, Indian Ambassador to Việt Nam Pranay Verma presented the National Library of Việt Nam many books written about the leader.

Since last year, the embassy has organised different activities to honour the leader’s birthday following the “Mahatma @150” initiative of the Indian Government.

In her official visit to Việt Nam in August last year, late Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj inaugurated a half-length statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the embassy’s campus.

The embassy also inaugurated four artificial arms and legs centres for people with disabilities in Vĩnh Phúc, Phú Thọ, Quảng Ninh and Yên Bái provinces. — VNS
