HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam finished fifth at the 13th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) in Hungary, the Vietnam News Agency has reported.

Eight team members, 11th graders from Hà Nội-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, won one gold medal, three silver medals, three bronze medals and a consolation prize.

Nguyễn Mạnh Quân from the school’s Physics 1 Class was also recognised as the absolute winner for his perfect performance in the competition.

The event took place in Hungary from August 2 to 10, attracting the participation of students from 42 countries and territories.

The competition aims to promote students' interest in astronomy and related subjects.

At present, astronomy and astrophysics are not included in the official curriculum of Việt Nam’s public high schools.

In last year's IOAA in China, the Vietnamese team bagged four medals and placed in the top ten. — VNS
