National scientific research competition kicks off in HCM City

HCM CITY — Registration for the 21st annual Eureka Award competition is open to all Vietnamese students who have a passion for scientific research until September 30.

Đoàn Kim Thành, director of the Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union's Youth Development Science and Technology Centre, and head of the competition's organisation board, said: “The award helps to nurture young talent in scientific research and develop projects with potential that will contribute to the country’s development."

All students from universities, colleges and vocational schools nationwide can join the competition as an individual or in groups of no more than five.

The award accepts research projects in 12 fields, including pharmaceutical chemistry technology, biotechnology and biomedical technology, information technology, food technology, education, economy, engineering, agriculture, forestry and fishery, law, planning, architecture and construction, natural resources and environment, and social affairs and humanities.

Contestants can submit their entries at the Youth Scientific and Technological Promotion Centre at No 1 Phạm Ngọc Thạch Street in HCM City’s District 1, or via email at khoahoctre@gmail.com, or the website www.khoahoctre.com.vn.

Outstanding projects will receive one special prize worth VNĐ20 million (US$860), first prizes worth VNĐ10 million ($430) each, second prizes worth VNĐ5 million ($215) each, third prizes worth VNĐ3 million ($128) each, and consolation prizes worth VNĐ2 million ($85) each.

The competition’s final round and an awards ceremony will be held at the HCM City University of Transport in November.

The Eureka Award was organised for the first time in 1999. It attracted more than 900 entries from 2,000 students from 106 educational units last year. A total of 100 scientific projects were awarded Eureka prizes with total value of VNĐ336 million ($14,425).

This year, the competition is hosted by the HCM City chapter of the Hồ Chí Minh Communist Youth Union in collaboration with the Việt Nam National University-HCM City. — VNS
