LAI CHÂU — Border guards in Phong Thổ District in the northern mountainous province of Lai Châu have detained four people in connection with human trafficking, Captain Nguyễn Mạnh Linh, deputy head of Ma Lù Thàng border point, said.

At 8:30am on Tuesday, border soldiers at the Ma Lù Thàng border point found four women and one man wading in a stream that extends from China into Việt Nam. They were taken to the border point for investigation.

The four women, aged 19 to 25, from Điện Biên Province said they had been sold to China to work as prostitutes.

The man who accompanied them was Đoàn Xuân Vinh, 20, from Gia Lai Province.

Vinh confessed that one of his friends had asked him to take the women to the border to sell them.

Five days ago, Vinh took the four women to China to an individual and the women were then sent to a massage shop to work as prostitutes.

After an inspection by Chinese authorities, Vinh took the women back to Việt Nam.

Based on Vinh's testimony, provincial border soldiers arrested three additional people related to the case.— VNS
