Poachers under investigation into national park’s deforestation

QUẢNG BÌNH — Police in Bố Trạch District in central Quảng Bình Province have started legal proceedings against six more people involved in a deforestation case at Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park.

They were charged with violating regulations on exploitation and protection of forests and forest products. Police also placed them in temporary detention for further investigation.

They are Trần Phúc An, Hoàng Văn Hương, Trần Đức Dũng, Nguyễn Văn Hương, Trần Xuân Vương and Hoàng Văn Hải. All reside in Sơn Trạch Commune.

Four poachers were arrested on Thursday afternoon. Two others were not found in their hometowns.

Earlier on April 23, seven other people were placed in temporary detention for investigation related to the deforestation case.

Since early March, about 66 trees with a total volume of nearly 100cu.m have been cut down in zones 649 and 650 in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park in Thượng Trạch Commune in Bố Trạch District.

In mid-March, rangers from the forest protection station in Quảng Ninh District found dozens of trees measuring between 40 and 120cm in diametre that had been illegally chopped down. — VNS
