ĐÀ NẴNG – Untreated wastewater has been directly discharged into a lake at the city of Đà Nẵng’s March 29 Park, causing severe pollution, online news outlet zing.vn reported on Tuesday.

A local resident said people had reported the situation to local authorities several times but they had not yet taken steps to remedy it.

The lake’s sewer is connected with a spillway on Nguyễn Văn Linh Street which allowed wastewater run directly into it.

“Fish die sometimes," said a park janitor. "Garbage thrown to the lake makes the pollution even worse."

Mai Mã, director of Đà Nẵng drainage and wastewater treatment company, said the metre-long spillway system might be overflowed, letting untreated wastewater leak into the lake.

“About 500cu.m of untreated wastewater pours into the lake per day," he said. "There are two sewer gates receiving wastewater from Nguyễn Tri Phương Street and Nguyễn Văn Linh Street into the lake."

“The company is having workers check and handle the case,” he said.

According to Mã, city authorities plan to build a drainage and wastewater treatment system along Nguyễn Tất Thành Street which will receive all wastewater in the area for treatment at Phú Lộc Water Treatment Plant. – VNS
