AN GIANG — A fire early Sunday morning destroyed four houses in Vĩnh Trường Commune, An Phú District, the southern province of An Giang.

The fire is believed to have started at a stilt house in La Ma Hamlet at about 2.40am and then spread.

Local residents and firefighters controlled the fire within one hour after it destroyed four houses and partly damaged five others.

Chairman of Vĩnh Trường Commune People’s Committee Nguyễn Văn On said that families whose houses were destroyed were given VNĐ15 million (US$646) each for support, while families with partly-damaged houses were given VNĐ12.5 million ($538) each.

Meanwhile, in the central province of Bà Ria-Vũng Tàu, a fire which was detected at a dump in Tóc Tiên Waste Treatment Area on Saturday was still blazing on Sunday.

Local firefighters said that it could take days to control the fire because of the mountain of waste and windy conditions.
