BÌNH ĐỊNH — The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), in collaboration with Bình Định Province’s People’s Committee, on Sunday started work on a new reservoir in An Lão District.

The reservoir, with a designed capacity of nearly 90 million cubic metres, has total investment of VNĐ2.14 trillion (US$93 million).

The project aims to improve irrigation for agricultural production and water supplies for thousands of local people.

The Irrigation Construction and Investment Management Board 6 under MARD is acting as the investor and the provinical Agriculture and Rural Development Project Management Board is responsible for the compensation, support and resettlement for local people.

Phạm Văn Nam, chairman of An Lão District People’s Committee, said the reservoir needed over 1,300ha of land which meant that 443 ethnic H’re households must be relocated.

They would be resettled in An Trung and An Hưng communes.

MARD deputy minister Hoàng Văn Thắng said construction quality, labour and fire safety would be ensured as well as environmental sanitation.

The deputy minister also asked the People’s Committee and relevant units to carry out site clearance, relocation and resettlements.

The project is expected to boost socio-economic development while improving the local ecosystem and environment in An Lão, Hoài An, Hoài Nhơn and Phù Mỹ.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2021. — VNS
