The driver causing an accident that killed three people on Saturday was tested positive to morphine, said the Gia Lai Province Traffic Safety Committee yesterday.

GIA LAI — The driver who caused an accident that killed a man, his wife and her five-year-old daughter on Saturday has tested positive for morphine, said the Gia Lai Province Traffic Safety Committee.

The test also revealed Nguyễn My Đal, 39, had not drunk alcohol.

A member of the opiate family, morphine is a strong painkiller which is found naturally in a number of plants and animals. 

Đal admitted to the police that he suffered from neck pains and had taken medication which contained morphine.

Local police are conducting further investigation on the case.

The accident happened at about 4.30pm on Saturday in Ia Dêr Commune, Ia Grai District in the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.

My Đal was driving a car which crashed into a motorbike. Three people on the motorbike died on the spot.

The provincial traffic safety committee supported the family with VNĐ15 million (US$650) whereas local people donated more than VNĐ80 million ($3,400). — VNS
