Whirlwinds, heavy rain damage crops and trees in northern mountainous region

Hundreds of hectares of crops and trees were damaged after heavy rainfall and whirlwinds swept through a northern mountainous province on Sunday afternoon.

LÀO CAI — Hundreds of hectares of crops and trees were damaged after heavy rainfall and whirlwinds swept through a northern mountainous province on Sunday afternoon.

Lào Cai Province’s Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue Department reported on Monday no casualties, but serious damage to crops and 30 residential houses in Bát Xát District.

Heavy rain, hail and whirlwind also hit Tam Đường District and Lai Châu City in Lai Châu Province, damaging a large area of crops and trees.

According to the local weather office, hailstones with a diametre of 2-4cm fell.

Strong winds also uprooted trees, panels, posters and unroofed some houses, Trần Văn Xùng, deputy chairman of Tam Đường District People’s Committee, said.

“This is the biggest hailstorm in the area in the last two years, and we are expecting more bad weather to come.”

In Yên Bái Province, thunderstorms accompanied by hail on Saturday and Sunday damaged 50 houses in Mù Cang Chải District.

On Sunday afternoon and early Monday, many localities in Sơn La were hit by heavy thunderstorms. Hail struck Thuận Châu, Mường La, Phù Yên and Mộc Châu districts, affecting thousands of households. The most serious damage occurred in Tân Lập, Phiêng Luông, Đông Sang and Mường Sang communes.

Besides residential damage, many areas of agricultural production and fruit trees that were ready for harvest were destroyed.

Authorities are reviewing the damage and sending support workers to cope with the situation.
