HCM CITY – A sea of garbage greeted sanitation workers near Bạch Đằng Wharf and at Tôn Đức Thắng Street at the intersection with Nguyễn Huệ Flower Road after the Lunar New Year Eve fireworks display at midnight yesterday (Monday).

Most of it was plastic sheets, paper and foam used for sitting to watch the fireworks. There were also water bottles, bread wrappers, peanuts, melon seeds all the way from the Sài Gòn River to Nguyễn Huệ Street.

There was so much garbage that it turned the street white and got caught in motorbike tyres.

Bạch Đằng Park was worse: There was not only garbage but also the reek of alcohol and urine.

At 2am on Lunar New Year, the situation had not improved much though the sanitation workers have been toiling away.

According to a woman worker, it was the same every year though this time the quantity of litter was unusually high.

"With this amount [of garbage] we must be cleaning until morning," she said. — VNS
