HÀ NỘI — Hà Nội Observatory will be open to the public from the second quarter of this year, Việt Nam National Space Centre (VNSC) announced on Wednesday, according to Thanh niên (Young people) newspaper.

Located at Hoà Lạc Hi-tech Park, the biggest observatory in the north will be a gathering space to study astronomy and the universe.

Construction began in 2015 under the framework of the Việt Nam National Space Centre project with investment of VNĐ12 trillion (US$516 million) allocated from the Japanese ODA.

Việt Nam’s first and largest observatory in the coastal city of Nha Trang came into operation in September, 2017.

The main observation device of the Hà Nội Observatory, a Ritchey-Chretien optical reflecting telescope with a 50cm aperture, is the largest in Việt Nam.

The large aperture allows the telescope to receive more light, helping an observer see more objects in clearer details.

It also has a planetarium dome of 100 seats with six planetarium projectors.

Phạm Anh Tuấn, VNCS director, said the observatory was open on a pilot basis before officially opening.

“VNSC is planning to ask for independent financing mechanisms for the two observatories in Hà Nội and Nha Trang City.  However, they are operated for educational, not commercial purposes,” he said.

The currently unannounced entrance fees will be used for devices’ operation and maintenance, he added. — VNS
