HÀ NỘI The Supreme People’s Court has announced an indictment involving Phan Văn Anh Vũ, known as Vũ Nhôm and officials of Ministry of Public Security for their violations in the purchase and sale of State-owned houses and land in Đà Nẵng and HCM City.

According to the indictment released on Saturday, it was an “extremely serious corruption case” that caused public concern involving high-ranking officials of the ministry, causing huge losses to the State budget.

The ministry’s former general director Trần Việt Tân, and former director Bùi Văn Thành were prosecuted for “showing irresponsibility, causing serious consequences” in line with Article 285 of the 1999 Criminal Code. Phan Văn Anh Vũ; Nguyễn Hữu Bách, former ministry’s official and Phan Hữu Tuấn, former deputy general director of the ministry were charged with “abusing position and power while performing duties” in line with Article 356 of the 2015 Criminal Code.

According to the indictment, Vũ Nhôm abused his power, along with support of Nguyễn Hữu Bách and Phan Hữu Tuấn, hired, purchased and transferred houses without auctions and not in line with State regulations. He then made them his own properties or his relatives’ or transferred them under the ownership of other people to earn illegal profits, causing a loss of more than VNĐ1.15 trillion (US$48.9 million) to the State budget.

Bách and Tuấn caused losses of more than VNĐ2.26 trillion ($96.2 million) in total.

Bùi Văn Thành was prosecuted for lacking responsibilities in supervising housing prices and allowing Vũ to commit illegal transfer, causing a loss of over VNĐ222 billion ($9.5 million).

Trần Việt Tân showed irresponsibility in management that created conditions for Vũ to abuse his position and power. The loss Tân caused was over VNĐ155 billion ($6.6 million).

On December 14, the Investigation Police Agency under the Ministry of Public Security started criminal proceedings against Thành and Tân for showing irresponsibility, causing serious consequences.

Earlier, Thành had been dismissed from his post as Deputy Minister of Public Security, and Tân was stripped of his title as former Deputy Minister of Public Security for the 2011-2016 tenure. — VNS
