HÀ NỘI — A pilot programme to use smart cards on the bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Hà Nội will be launched in October.

The programme will be co-implemented by the Hà Nội Transport Service Company (Transerco) and Viettel Corporation.

The two companies have installed equipment, including card readers, camera systems and ticket stalls along 23 stations on the BRT system.

They also have built software to issue smart cards and manage passenger data.

A representative of Transerco said the smart cards were designed so that they could be used to pay for all public transit fares in the future.

“It is a trending payment method, convenient for both passengers and bus companies,” he added.

Passengers will be able to register for smart cards at BRT stations on Kim Mã, Núi Trúc, Hoàng Đạo Thuý and Yên Nghĩa, or via www.timbus.vn. The application is available now for both Android and iOS operating systems.

Smart cards are expected to be used across all bus routes in the city if the pilot programme is successful.— VNS
