HÀ NỘI — Nearly 40,000 State employees have been made redundant since 2015 as part of Party and Government efforts to downsize the number of public employees.

Chief of the Ministry of Home Affairs office Vũ Đăng Minh revealed the figures at a press conference on August 21.

Minh said more than 5,750 employees were made redundant in 2015, more than 11,900 employees in 2016, about 12,660 employees in 2017 and some 9,460 in the first seven months of 2018.

Minh added that the number of employees made redundant in public non-business units accounted for 68.08 per cent, in administrative agencies 11.87 per cent and in commune-level agencies accounting 15.42 per cent of the total.

“The ministry of home affairs is a pioneer in re-arranging and reforming its public non-business units,” he said.

The ministry had cut down from six education and training centres to two during the period, namely the National Academy of Public Administration and Hà Nội University of Home Affairs.

The national academy of public administration also restructured its units, cutting down from 24 to 17.

In a related move, the Government recently approved hiring nearly 260,000 new State employees in 2019, about 2 per cent lower than 2018 and 7 per cent lower than in 2015.

A 2015 resolution aims to cut the number of new State employees to about 10 per cent compared to 2015.

Statistics from the Ministry of Finance showed that more than seven million people receive their wage from the State budget.

The payment of salaries, pension and other allowances from the State budget are included in the annual regular expenditures of the Government.

It is estimated to account for up to half of the annual regular expenditures of the Government, equal to VNĐ400 trillion (US$17.2 billion) each year. — VNS
