SÓC TRĂNG — Sóc Trăng Province is seeking investment in wind power projects and has asked prospective investors to send in applications.

It has received 69 applications, 16 from joint venture investors, 24 from foreign companies and 29 from domestic companies.

The plants will be built in three coastal districts of Vĩnh Châu, Trần Đề and Cù Lao Dung.

Lê Thành Trí, deputy chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said the investors would be chosen based on criteria such as financial capacity, ability to carry out a project, experience, and technology.

Earlier this year the province began to build the first wind farm, a 2,489ha hectare facility in Lai Hoà Ward, Vĩnh Châu District, with a capacity of 98MW.

Sóc Trăng has great potential for wind power with average wind speeds of 6-6.4 metres per second.

According to experts, successful commercial production in the province would be a great boost to the country’s wind power industry and help mitigate climate change.— VNS
