ĐÀ NẴNG — A sick eight-month old baby from Chàm Island, 20km off the coast of Hội An City in central Quảng Nam Province, was taken to the mainland for treatment by a rescue team on Thursday.

The Đà Nẵng-based Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Co-ordination Centre No 2 said the newborn baby, named Trần Hữu Phúc, from Tam Hiệp Commune, had a high fever and vomited blood around 2.30am yesterday morning.

The baby was taken to the communal health centre, but its condition did not improve.

Strong winds, hard rain and big seas almost isolated the island from the mainland for several days and no ship could approach to the island.

The centre eventually sent a ship with a rescue team after getting an SOS from border guards on the island. The vessel took the baby to Đà Nẵng.

The baby is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Last week, eight sailors, including four Indians, were rescued by a ship from the search centre in the sea off the coast of Bình Định Province. — VNS
