HÀ NỘI — The North-South train service through Cả Pass has resumed operation after ten days of interruption in the aftermath of typhoon Damrey, Vietnam Railways has announced.

Damrey, the 12th storm to hit Việt Nam this year, knocked trees, sign posts and power lines onto the railway lines, submerged several sections of the track under water, and caused landslides on Cả Pass, paralysing all train services.

As a result, passengers to HCM City were forced to stop at Tuy Hòa Station in Phú Yên Province and travel to Vạn Giã Station in Khánh Hòa Province by bus. The work of clearing the North-South railway faced difficulties due to rough terrain and bad weather, the corporation said. However, staff have worked around the clock to clear the tracks as soon as possible.

The first phase of the repair work has been completed one day ahead of schedule. However, trains are limited to a speed of 5km per hour through this section until all issues have been resolved.

The corporation has asked relevant agencies to prepare human resources and equipment to complete the second phase as soon as possible. — VNS
