Viet Nam News HẢI PHÒNG — Construction of a section of National Highway 10 across Quang Trung Commune in Hải Phòng City’s An Lão District has been suspended for two days due to protests by locals.
Some residents of Quang Trung Commune living along Highway 10 said they blocked the road because the road rollers and vibrators had caused cracks and subsidence of some houses since April, Thanh Niên (Young People) newspaper reported.
The subsidence affected 14 houses, and residents also reported that cracks had developed along the walls of their houses, which showed signs of tilting.
The affected households reported the incident to the local government and construction contractor TASCO Hải Phòng One Member Limited Company, asking them to inspect, compensate and help people repair their homes.
On May 17, local authorities held a dialogue and asked the villagers to allow the contractor to pave the road surface, following which they were to assess the damage for compensation.
However, the contractor did keep up its end of the bargain, forcing locals to protest against the construction.
Đỗ Văn Chuyên, chairman of the People’s Committee of Quang Trung Commune, on Monday said that in the aftermath the local protest, construction was halted and inspection was conducted to assess damage to houses for compensation.
Đào Thị Thanh, a resident, said they would allow work to resume once the contractor provided satisfactory compensation. — VNS
