HẢI PHÒNG – Police in northern Hải Phòng City on Monday announced they had busted a ring transporting drugs from the Việt Nam-Laos border to the city and surrounding provinces.
The police seized 28 cakes of heroin weighing nearly 9.83kg and 8kg of methamphetamine.
This is the largest drug haul seized by the Hải Phòng police so far.
Ring leader Ngô Trắc Hiệp, 52, of the city’s Lê Chân District, was arrested while transporting the drugs on the Hà Nội-Hải Phòng Highway.
He hid the drugs in holes behind the car seats. Hiệp changed the structure of his car to create secret holes to hide the drugs and usually transported the drugs himself. The police also seized VNĐ200 million (US$8,800) and other objects related to drug trafficking from his house in Lê Chân District.
According to initial investigation, Hiệp spent considerable time in Laos and in Việt Nam-Laos border provinces, therefore, he knew the area well and had developed relationship with drug traffickers and traders.
The police have initiated criminal proceedings against Hiệp though they are still continuing to investigate the case. — VNS
