NHA TRANG — The People’s Committee of Nha Trang City of south central Khánh Hòa Province reaffirmed the ban on floating restaurants in Nha Trang Bay.
Earlier, the provincial People’s Committee had ordered floating restaurants across the locality to shut down. However, some households proposed local authorities allow them to continue the business to return capital and pay back debts borrowed to invest in rafts.
The city’s People’s Committee responded to the residents and rejected their proposal following the direction of the provincial People’s Committee.
According to the city’s People’s Committee, Khánh Hòa Province has yet to issue any regulation on floating restaurant management.
Trần Việt Trung, director of the province’s Tourism Department, told vov.vn that local tourism agencies have committed not to take tourists to these floating rafts for eating.
“Now these floating rafts have been fixed to fishing rafts. Tourists can only take a look and buy fish there,” he said.
The dangers of floating restaurants, which are essentially makeshift fishing rafts, were in the spotlight after one restaurant with 300 guests on board collapsed and killed two people in Vĩnh Hy Bay in nearby Ninh Thuận Province last July.
According to the provincial Transport Department, 50 floating restaurants operating in the province were shut down. — VNS
