ĐỒNG THÁP — Rescue forces salvaged a truck from Nhất Canal in the Mekong Delta province of Đồng Tháp’s Thanh Mỹ Commune on Thursday afternoon.

The truck, weighing some 19 tonnes, reportedly fell into the canal when the bridge across the canal suddenly collapsed early Thursday. Only vehicles with maximum capacity of five tonnes are permitted to cross the bridge.

Fortunately, the truck driver and his assistant survived and only received minor injuries.

The accident caused difficulties for residents while travelling and damaged a pipeline providing water to 80 households.

The local authority had to mobilise boats to carry people across the canal. The bridge was built over a decade ago. It was once collapsed in 2013 due to overweight vehicles.

Police are investigating the case. — VNS
