HÀ NỘI — Việt Đức Hospital this morning suspended all members of the surgical team that operated on the right leg of a 37-year-old male patient, instead of his left leg yesterday afternoon.

Vice Director of the hospital Trần Bình Giang said it was a mistake of the hospital doctors.

He told local media at a press briefing this morning that the hospital had apologised to the patient and his family.

The hospital would pay all medical and surgical costs of the patient, Giang said.

The surgical team members were asked to report the surgery process and an expertise group was established to review the process and find out the cause of the mistake, he said.

The 37-year-old patient from Hà Nội’s Ứng Hòa District found that his right leg had been operated yesterday evening, even though he had been diagnosed with nerve paralysis in his left leg.

The family members of the patient said they became aware of the mistake when seeing the patient’s both legs get bandaged up and  the hospital fee counter staff asked them to pay more. — VNS
