HÀ NỘI — The National Traffic Safety Committee plans to promote digital traffic violation enforcement using surveillance cameras in 2025 in an effort to tighten traffic order.
Lê Kim Thành, deputy chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee, said the traffic police will stiffen fines on driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding, and will encourage assistance from citizens in detecting violations.
The Ministry of Public Security reported that 23,689 road accidents occurred countrywide in 2024, resulting in 10,965 fatalities and 17,567 injuries.
There were 918 fewer fatalities than during 2023.
Thành said the goal for 2025 is to reduce the number of traffic accidents, deaths and injuries, address traffic congestion and pollution from vehicles, and build a safe traffic culture.
The committee is looking to eliminate prolonged congestion in big cities like Hà Nội, HCM City and on main traffic routes, he said.
He said all localities and relevant agencies need to take action even during the Lunar New Year and spring festivals.
Colonel Nguyễn Quang Nhật, head of the Department of Traffic Accident Investigation and Communication under the Traffic Police Department, said police will prioritise using technology, monitoring systems and cameras to provide images proving violations combined with on-the-spot detection.
The deduction of driving licence points is shared with the public service portal, connected to the national population database. After integrating documents related to drivers and vehicles into the VNeID app, citizens can track them anytime, anywhere with just a smartphone, he said.
Lieutenant Colonel Phạm Đức Hoàng, captain of the Road Traffic Police Team 14 under the Hà Nội Police, said at areas with high traffic volume, police have used cameras provided by the Ministry of Public Security and the city’s police officers to record violations. The camera also records dates, times and locations of violations.
Since cameras are being used to detect violations, traffic offences have decreased significantly. Public awareness in complying with the law and traffic signals has also improved, he said.
Thanks to the application of science and technology, drivers can review their violations. The department has proposed installing more cameras at intersections, Hoàng said. — VNS
