HÀ NỘI The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has decided to temporarily suspend operations at four airports: Đà Nẵng, Phú Bài, Đồng Hới, and Chu Lai on October 27 to ensure safety during Typhoon Trami.
Phú Bài International Airport (Thừa Thiên Huế) will halt operations from 06:00am to 10:00pm, while Đồng Hới Airport (Quảng Bình) will stop operations from 06:00am to 07:00pm on October 27.
Đà Nẵng International Airport will suspend operations from 06am on October 27 until 04:00am on October 28, and Chu Lai Airport (Quảng Nam) will be closed from 10:00am on October 27 until 10:00am on October 28.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has stated that Typhoon Trami poses a potential threat to the safety of operations at several airports in central Việt Nam, necessitating the temporary suspension. The Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation has been instructed to notify incoming flights to central Việt Nam and ensure safe air traffic operations.
By 10:00am on October 27, the storm is forecast to reach the offshore waters of the central coast, maintaining wind speeds of levels 10-11, with gusts up to level 14. The storm will then shift to a southwest and eastward direction, reducing its speed to 5-10 km/h. Due to the slow movement and change of direction, the impact on land is expected to last over a day, from October 27 until the morning of October 28.
Đà Nẵng City and Thừa Thiên Huế Province would be majorly affected areas of the storm, with rainfall expected from 200mm to 400mm, or over 500mm in some mountainous areas.
Typhoon Trami is expected to cause strong winds in mainland areas from Quảng Bình to Quảng Ngãi, and Đà Nẵng City’s districts of Hải Châu, Thanh Khê, Ngũ Hành Sơn, Sơn Trà, Liên Chiểu and Hoà Vang will be affected with wind speeds from 8th to 9th level (between 62-74kmh and 75-88kmh).
Heavy rainfall is expected from midnight on October 26 to noon on October 28, causing partial flooding in some low-lying areas and streets.
More than 1,500 fishing boats had already docked at Thọ Quang port by the afternoon of October 26.
The city also banned all access to the Sơn Trà Mountain and nearby beaches starting from noon on October 26.
A 1km section of sea dyke in Thừa Thiên Huế Province’s Thuận An beach has been reinforced by the afternoon of October 26 to prevent serious erosion from the storm.
The province has planned to relocate 52,000 residents in the coastal and low-lying areas to safe shelters, while 1,800 boats carrying more than 10,000 labourers and fishermen were returning to the home ports.
Typhoon Trami formed from a tropical depression in the waters east of the Philippines. It intensified into a storm on October 22 and caused devastation in the Philippines on October 23, resulting in at least 66 fatalities and the evacuation of 47,500 people due to heavy rains and flooding. VNS
