THỪA THIÊN-HUẾ – Huế Central Hospital in central Thừa Thiên-Huế Province has received and provided intensive monitoring for patient infected with Plasmodium falciparum (++++) malaria who recently returned to Việt Nam from Angola.

According to the hospital’s deputy director Hoàng Thị Lan Hương, the female patient, 32, who is at the 19th week of pregnancy, was diagnosed with septic shock, malignant malaria and acute liver failure.

After nearly three days of treatment, the patient’s health is improved. She is awake and has a good response, but her condition is still serious, the doctor said.

Currently, the patient is being treated with antibiotics, anti-malarial and vasoactive drugs, electrolyte rehydration and appropriate nutritional supplements.

Along with that, medical staff are closely monitoring the patient's haemodynamic and foetal condition.

Previously, the patient had intermittent fever, jaundice, poor appetite and was hospitalised with fever, abdominal pain, fatigue and low blood pressure.

After medical consultation and foetal examination, the patient was transferred to the hospital’s Intensive Care Department for continued monitoring.

The patient has lived and worked in Angola for a year. She returned to Việt Nam on March 4.

The Centre for Disease Control of Thừa Thiên-Huế Province is investigating the patient's epidemiology and asking the local medical facilities to promptly report if detecting malaria cases. VNS
