HÀ NỘI — Provinces and cities across the country, including those seriously damaged by a typhoon recently, are ready to welcome the new school year, which will start on September 5.

In Yên Bái northern mountainous province, a report of the Mù Cang Chải District Division for Education and Training said that the Hồ Bốn Commune Primary and Junior Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Students and the Xéo Dì Hồ Primary School in Lao Chải Commune were seriously destroyed by the typhoon on August 5.

The Xéo Dì Hồ School’s kitchen was completely destroyed and all of the 7,000sq.m of the Hồ Bốn School was submerged by soil and rock.

Nguyễn Anh Thủy, head of the division, said that between August 9 and 13, on average, from 70 to 120 people from different units in the district came to the Hồ Bốn School per day to repair the damage.

With much effort, now all schools in the district are in acceptable conditions, including infrastructure, teaching and learning equipment, kitchens and boarding rooms for students ahead of the new school year.

A representative from the Yên Bái Province Department of Education and Training (DoET) told the Vietnam News Agency correspondent that an organisation sponsored textbooks for the Hồ Bốn School.

Secretary of the Yên Bái Party Committee Đỗ Đức Duy highly appreciated the cooperation of all sectors, especially the armed forces, in helping schools overcome the consequences of typhoon.

Four teachers whose houses completely collapsed in the typhoon are still dedicated to education.

Sùng A Bính, chairman of the Hồ Bốn Commune People’s Committee, said that the Hồ Bốn School now ensured accommodation and hygiene for students.

All other places in the school will continue to be improved to be ready for the new school year on September 5.

In Kiên Giang southern province, deputy director of the provincial DoET Huỳnh Văn Hóa said that the province built and repaired classrooms and other necessary works to ensure all the best conditions for the opening of the new school year.

The province invested nearly VNĐ100 billion (US$4.2 million) to build 833 classrooms, repair more than 800 others and equip 4,330 sets of computers and many other equipment.

The schools’ appearance, especially the ones in rural, border and islands areas, was significantly changed, meeting the requirements of teaching and learning, he said.

The province has a total of 345,130 students at different levels in the school year 2023-24. The education sector worked with local authorities and concerned organisations to support poor students to have the maximum number of students who can go to school.

The south central province of Ninh Thuận will have more than 149,100 students this school year, an increase of about 3,700 ones compared with the last school year.

To well conduct all duties this year, the province spent about VNĐ370 billion ($15.6 million) to build 365 classrooms, repair 398 others and five swimming pools for schools.

Nguyễn Anh Linh, deputy director of the provincial DoET, said that the department organised training courses to enhance teachers’ professional capacity and renewed their teaching methods. — VNS
