THANH HÓA — A migrant worker mother has travelled more than 1,500km back to her hometown in Thanh Hoá Province overnight to meet her son before he takes his high school graduation exam.

Lò Thị Thỏa, 38, residing in Thanh Hóa Province has been working in Bình Dương Province since 2015. Her son, Lò Văn Lâm, is a student at the Boarding High School for Ethnic Minorities in Thanh Hóa preparing for the high school graduation exam.

Thỏa arrived in Thanh Hóa on Monday, going straight to the school to encourage her son.

"I came back, but my son didn't know. It was only when he entered the school that he found out I had come to visit. We embraced each other with both joy and sadness. If he knew I took this long ride back, he wouldn't have let me come," said Thỏa.

Thỏa is a poor single mother and has been working as a migrant worker in Bình Dương Province in southern Việt Nam. Due to difficult circumstances, Lâm was raised by his grandmother. Therefore, they only had a few short days together during the Tết (Lunar New Year) holiday.

"This high school graduation exam is crucial for him. Other students have their parents by their side to support them, but Lâm does not. I couldn't bear it, so I took a ride back to encourage him. Upon arrival, the school arranged free accommodation for me in the dormitory, close to my son," Thỏa said.

Lâm was surprised, and he promised to try his best in the exam. He plans to apply to an economics university in Hồ Chí Minh City so that he and his mother can be closer to each other. — VNS
