Sixty-seven people killed in 129 accidents during the five-day holiday

HÀ NỘI — A total of 129 traffic accidents occurred across Việt Nam during the five-day national holiday from April 29 to May 3, killing 67 people and injuring 90 others, according to the Traffic Police Department.

The figures represented decreases of 6.5 per cent, 6.9 per cent and 15.1 per cent, respectively.

On the nation's roads, 125 accidents claimed 64 lives and injured 90 others. Meanwhile, three people were killed in four railway accidents.

Over the holiday, traffic policemen nationwide punished more than 49,300 violation cases with fines totalling VNĐ107.6 billion (US$4.58 million); and seized 847 automobiles, 20,067 motorbikes, and 210 other vehicles; and withdrew 11,033 driving licences.

Most offences involved drink-driving (15,852 cases), speeding (10,649 cases), overloaded freights (489 cases), drugs (33 cases), and transporting more people than allowed (867 cases).

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry’s Department of Medical Service Administration said that in four days, from 7am on April 29 to 7am on May 3, medical examination and treatment establishments nationwide examined and provided first aid for 270,031 people; more than 99,700 were hospitalised.

It noted that nothing is out of the ordinary with the traffic accident victims in the holiday this year. The number of deaths from traffic accidents was reported at 82, with 28 passing at medical institutions, 34 dead on the way to the hospitals, and 20 expected deaths at home.

Hospitals across the country received about 2,477 COVID-19 patients through the holiday; 17 deaths were recorded, with seven dead at medical institutions and ten expected deaths at home (following death prognosis); 1,684 people were discharged from the hospitals after recovery. — VNS
