HCM CITY — Only the International Driving Permit (IDP) is valid for use in Việt Nam; other types of international driver's license, including IAA driving license, are not valid for use in the country.

The Road and Railway Traffic Police Office under the HCM City’s Police Department said on Tuesday that it is laid out under Clauses 1 and 2, Article 3 of the Circular No. 29, dated July 6, 2015 of the Minister of Transport.

The police also said currently, some foreigners and Vietnamese with foreign nationality have used two types of international driving licenses in Việt Nam.

The two international driving licenses consist of IAA’s international driving license, issued by the International Automobile Association based in New York in the United States, and the IDP, issued by competent state agencies of countries (including administrative regions), participating in the 1968 Vienna Convention, the police said.

However, only the IDP is valid in Việt Nam, the police said.

The police also warned people to be careful with advertisements on social networking sites that advertised the service of changing into IAA driving license with the promise of being valid in many countries around the world, including Việt Nam.

The police added that for people, who present an IAA international driving license, the police will handle it as an administrative violation for not having a driving license. — VNS
