KIÊN GIANG — A 56-year-old man of Dương Tơ Commune, Phú Quốc City died after saving five tourists from drowning when they were swimming at Trường Beach on Wednesday afternoon.

Local man Nguyễn Văn Thái rushed into the sea when hearing a group of tourists, three adults and two children, shouting for help.

When he reached the victims, Thái tried to pull them to the shore but had difficulty because the waves were too big. At the same time, Đỗ Duy Dũng, 35, took a boat, helping to bring the victims to the shore.

The tourists are now in stable condition.

After rescuing the tourists from big waves, Thái was exhausted and taken to Phú Quốc City Medical Centre.

According to doctors at the centre, Thái died from exhaustion before arriving at the centre.

This season, Phú Quốc Island in the southern province of Kiên Giang often has strong, high waves that pose an elevated risks of drowning for swimmers.
