Mekong Delta sees dramatic rise in new COVID-19 cases

The Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta city of Cần Thơ has posted a record number of daily new COVID-19 cases, with the number of cases reaching 712 on Wednesday (Nov 17), according to the municipal Department of Health.

 HCM CITY — The Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta city of Cần Thơ has posted a record number of daily new COVID-19 cases, with the number of cases reaching 712 on Wednesday, according to the municipal Department of Health.

Of that figure, 372 were community-transmitted cases, while 83 cases were detected in city-run quarantine facilities and the remaining 257 cases in home quarantine.

Three deaths from COVID-19 were reported on Wednesday, the department said.

The new daily COVID-19 cases hit an average of 200-300 in the last 10 days.

As of Wednesday, the city’s total number of infection cases had hit 14,152 since July 8, with 135 deaths.

During the period, more than 8,350 COVID-19 patients have recovered from the disease.

As many as 3,025 COVID-19 patients are being treated at health facilities, including 98 severe cases. With 3,100 hospital beds designated for COVID-19 patients, hospitals in the city are operating at full capacity.

To date, 96.1 per cent of the population in the city aged 18 and above has received one vaccine shot, and 41.3 per cent of the population aged 18 and above are fully vaccinated.

Under Government Resolution 128/NQ-CP, the level of risk in the city was upgraded to level 3 (high risk) on November 11 among the four levels of pandemic risk. It was level 1 (low risk) on October 18 and then level 2 on November 1.

Many provinces in the Mekong Delta on Wednesday also saw a dramatic rise in new cases, with Tiền Giang, Đồng Tháp, Sóc Trăng, Bạc Liêu, and Vĩnh Long recording hundreds of cases each.

A total of 526 new cases were recorded in Tiền Giang Province on Wednesday, including 131 community acquired infections, raising the total number to 22,000.

Đồng Tháp reported 489 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, an increase of 97 compared to the previous day.

As of Wednesday, the province’s total number of infection cases totalled 14,600. To date, 81.3 per cent of its population have received one vaccine shot and 52.9 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Sóc Trăng Province reported 399 new cases on Wednesday, Bạc Liêu 314, and Vĩnh Long 290. — VNS
