Việt Nam ranks sixth in US international student enrolment

Việt Nam remains the sixth leading country of origin of students in the US higher education system with 21,631 students. Vietnamese students accounted for 11 per cent of total international students in US colleges during the global pandemic.

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam is the sixth leading country of origin of students in the US higher education system with 21,631 students, accounting for 11 per cent of total international students in US colleges during the global pandemic.

Of this figure, 70.6 per cent were undergraduates, 15.6 per cent were graduate-level students, 12.1 per cent enrolled in Optional Practical Training (OPT), and the remaining 1.6 per cent were pursuing non-degree programmes, according to the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) annual “Open Doors” Report released November 16.

Vietnamese students continue to demonstrate a strong interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and business/ management studies.

In fact, 46 per cent of Vietnamese students pursued STEM studies, while 26.9 per cent of them choose business/management majors. 

The "Open Doors" shows that the United States remains the top destination for international students, welcoming over 914,000 international students from over 200 places of origin in the academic year 2020-2021. — VNS
