Young actress honoured at San Francisco Film Festival

HCM CITY — Young actress Quỳnh Chi of HCM City was honoured recently at the San Francisco International New Concept Film Festival 2018 at the Herbst Theatre in California.

Chi, 28, won the Excellent Actress 2018 as her lead role in Ở Đây Có Nắng (Here Comes the Sun), a dramatic feature produced by Hồng Hạc Media. 

The film, which is about family issues, centres on young women who make sacrifices to pursue their careers.  

The film’s script is written by Việt Linh, the southern region’s first female movie director.

In the 1990s, Linh worked for Giải Phóng Film Studio, one of the country’s leading State-owned film companies, after studying film in Russia.

She has directed dozens of movies, including Mê Thảo Thời Vang Bóng (Once upon a Time in Mê Thảo Village) and Chung Cư (The Tenement House), both of which won several prizes at local and international film festivals in France and Italy.   

In France, Mê Thảo Thời Vang Bóng was shown in cinemas for 12 weeks in 2002, while Chung Cư was screened for 14 weeks in 1999. 

In Ở Đây Có Nắng, Linh, who resides in Paris, worked with young director Đỗ Nam during filming. The film was in cinemas in January.     

The San Francisco International New Concept Film Festival 2018 TIFF closed on November 5. It attracted 70 films coming from dozens of countries and territories.  

The organisers presented the Best Film to The Little Sami and One Hundred Years of Love, both produced by Chinese filmmakers. — VNS
