HÀ NỘI — A ceremony took place in Hà Nội yesterday to commemorate the “Immortal Regiment” of Russia on the occasion of the 74th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War in Russia (May 9).

The event drew 1,000 veterans and families of soldiers who took part in the Great Patriotic War in Russia and the resistance war in Việt Nam.

They took part in a parade at the Thăng Long Royal Citadel.

The event was attended by Russian Ambassador to Việt Nam Konstantin Vasilievich Vnukov, Russian diplomats and citizens who are residing and working and in Việt Nam, and representatives of the Việt Nam Veterans Association (VVA). 

In his opening speech, Vnukov said this was the third time an event of this kind had been held in Việt Nam, adding that it affirmed that generations today remembered and were grateful for the glorious feats of the former Soviet Union (now Russian Federation) and Việt Nam. 

Colonel Nguyễn Khánh Duy from the VVA appreciated the close relations between the two nations during the wartime, adding the success of the October Revolution in 1917 created a premise for the success of Việt Nam’s August Revolution the same year . 

“Vietnamese people appreciated the Soviet Union’s support for Việt Nam in the resistance war and during national reconstruction,” Duy told Vietnam News Agency. 

On the same day, the Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Hà Nội held a screening of Creek of Silence, a new Russian film by A Litvinov’s production company. It reflected the tragic period in the Great Patriotic War. — VNS
