HCM CITY — Trẻ (Youth) Publishing House on Wednesday released Địa lý học Tự nhiên, Kinh tế và Lịch sử Nam Kỳ (Natural geography, economics, and history of southern Việt Nam), a series of books discussing different aspects of lives in the southern provinces of Việt Nam during the 20th century.

The 14-book series was originally written in French by the Indochina Scientific Research Association during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Six of them, featuring Bến Tre, Gia Định, Vĩnh Long, Châu Đốc, Long Xuyên and Sa Đéc provinces, hit the shelves first while the remaining eight will be introduced in 2018.

They were translated into Vietnamese by renowned translators Nguyễn Nghị and Nguyễn Thanh Long.

Each book, with a different length, consists of four chapters, including geography, economics, history, statistics and administration.

According to Nghị, this is the first time Địa lý học Tự nhiên, Kinh tế và Lịch sử Nam Kỳ is fully translated into Vietnamese, with its structure following that of the original French version.

Readers will have a realistic picture of southern Việt Nam during the early 20th century through French people’s perceptions, he said. — VNS
